The year of Freibad Toni: Ailton is without question one of the most colorful players Werder ever had under contract. Signed from UANL Tigres of Mexico in 1998, the Brazilian won the Bundesliga scoring title in the 2003/04 championship season with 28 goals, the best return since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1980/81. In 2004 he was even voted Footballer of the Year. He also won Goal of the Month three times in that season.
There was not much more he could have done.
