Werder rock the 2. Bundesliga North: after the bitter relegation of 1980 came immediate promotion, with the club's best record across all leagues since the Bundesliga was founded. Calculated with three points for a win, Werder would have taken 98 points from 42 matches. Promotion was secured on May 12, 1981 with a 3:0 win at VfB Oldenburg in the legendary Donnerschwee stadium, known as the hell of the north. Otto Rehhagel's side featured big names including Dieter Burdenski, Schalke legend Klaus Fichtel and Erwin Kostedde.

That left them level with arch-rivals Hamburg, whose goal difference was eight goals better. Small consolation: Rudi Voeller became the first Bremen player to win the league's top scorer crown.

The best goal output: the gunslingers from the Weser - Rudi Voeller, Frank Neubarth and Uwe Reinders - let rip in 1984/85. Eighty-seven goals remain a Werder Bundesliga record and were the strongest attack in the league that season. Kaiserslautern and Karlsruhe both trudged home after heavy beatings. Voeller, the undisputed crowd favorite of the era, scored 25 times. But it was still only enough for second because Bayern took four more points.

Historic double: 2003/04 was as Werder as Werder gets. Since Matchday 16, after a 3:1 against Leverkusen, Thomas Schaaf's side had led the table and never surrendered that place. Six points clear of Bayern, Werder won the Bundesliga and then the DFB Cup with a 3:2 over Alemannia Aachen in Berlin. In the shadow of Ailton, Ivan Klasnic became one of the discoveries of the season with 13 goals and 11 assists.

Champions despite leading only twice: perhaps the greatest Werder miracle in Bundesliga history. In 1992/93 Bremen became champions even though they stood top of the table only on the last two matchdays. On Matchday 4 they were down in 16th after a 5:2 defeat in Karlsruhe. On the final day they beat Stuttgart 3:0 while Bayern stumbled to a 3:3 at Schalke, making up at last for the title that had slipped away in 1986.
